Police Seek Public’s Help After At-Risk Tortoise Stolen From Chillicothe Pet Store

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The Chillicothe Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying two adults and two teenagers suspected of stealing an at-risk tortoise from a local pet store.

According to police, the theft happened Friday evening, July 17, 2026, shortly before 7 p.m. at Petland Chillicothe on North Bridge Street.

Investigators say the suspects, who appear to be a family, entered the store and walked directly to the tortoise habitat located in the rear of the business. Surveillance video reportedly shows that after another customer left the area, a younger male opened the habitat, reached inside, and removed the tortoise before concealing it under his clothing.

Police say the group then quickly left the store with the animal.

Authorities are asking anyone who recognizes the individuals shown in the surveillance images or who may have information about the location of the missing tortoise to contact police.
